A Handweaver's Notebook
Published in Paperback by Interweave Press (January, 1991)
Author: Sharon Alderman
Average review score:

A constant source of inspiration
Many, many gorgeous fabrics -- the author presents handfuls of fabrics (real eye candy!). For each group, she explains how she decided what to make -- correct fiber, weight and drape for specific uses, coordinating patterns and colors for coordinating uses. She also tells how: what yarns and colors, what weave patterns, with notes on finishing etc. The best part for me is that she tells about the design process -- the thoughts and experimentation that resulted in each group. I turn to it again and again for inspiration.

Happy Hands and Feet
This book is full of creative images made with a childs handprint or footprint. It gives you ideas for every holiday and season. I have enjoyed using the art projects as gifts or for my baby's scrapbook. When you look back on your artwork it's hard to believe that your hands and feet were ever that small.

HE'S PUT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HER HANDS

Silhouette Paper-cuttings by Dan Paulos Quotations by Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Ignatius Press, 128 pp. $21.95 cloth

At first glance HE'S PUT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HER HANDS appears to be a beautiful coffee-table book. It is that, but much more! The juxtaposition of Dan Paulos' stunning paper-cuttings with Mother Teresa's inspiring words makes this book a meditative journey into both Mary's life and our own.

Paulos' meticulous artistry breathes life and vibrancy into these black and white silhouettes. An American Catholic, his work was inspired by his mentor, the late Dominican Sister Mary Jean Dorcy. He sent a copy of his first book, a collaboration with Sister Mary Jean, to Mother Teresa and she accepted his proposal that they collaborate on this work.

The sixty-three pieces in this volume focus on the life of Mary. "Mary, Mother of God, was the first disciple of Jesus," Paulos says. "She was perfectly open to God's will and continues even now, to be a responsive model for all people." His depiction of the Virgin includes not only the key moments of her life recorded in scripture, but also many traditional and contemporary visions of her life and ongoing role in the Church. Among these are beautiful pieces such as "MARY'S LAST AUTUMN" - "APACHE MADONNA" and "MADONNA OF THE SLAUGHTERED JEWS."

Paulos spent three years researching Mother Teresa's quotations, matching them to his art work. Together they portray a deep love for the Blessed Mother and mirror her compassion for all people and her special concern for the poor. Mother Teresa's words have been rendered in beautiful calligraphy by twenty-four different calligraphers. The variety of their styles allow each quote to speak powerfully and uniquely.

This books was also translated into Japanese and published by Don Bosco Press in Tokyo. It later was translated into Italian, and was published by the Vatican.

H! E'S PUT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HER HANDS is a wonderful book for prayerful reflection - and would be a treasured gift to a friend.

Powerful technique
It's beyond my meager ability to comment on this book. All I can say is that it is well worth reading and practicing the simple, yet extremely powerful technique contained inside.

Beautifully Held Within Your Hands and Heart
As this book is held in your hands, one cannot help but feel the warmth within their heart. This small book is beautifully composed of quaint sentences, while accompied by simplisticly stunning black and white photography. "Heart in Hands" takes just moments to read, however, the images last a lifetime. This book is perfect for all who find love in their hearts and appreciate the love our touch provides. It is a perfect gift to give, so that another may feel warmth within their hands and heart, as it has touched many others before them.

Hearts and Hands: Making Peace in a Violent Time
Published in Hardcover by Seven Stories Press (09 September, 2001)
Author: Luis J. Rodriguez
Average review score:

Great Book
This is a must read for youth workers who get (or need to get) the political and social justice context of their field. It was written by someone in the trenches and not the ivory tower of foundations, university or some nonprofits. It is well written and thought provoking.

Here All Dwell Free: Stories to Heal the Wounded Feminine
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (November, 1991)
Authors: Gertrud Mueller Nelson and Mueller Gertrud Nelson
Average review score:

A Wonderful Book
Here All Dwell Free may be an awkward title but it is right on. Mueller Nelson has an exquisite but powerful and compelling way of presenting complex and important psychological information so that anyone can understand and benefit. This book pulls one into that mythical land with devils and angels entirely compatible with any religious conviction because she is addressing archetypal issues which all humankind must address or avoid. Mueller-Nelson convinces one to take the risk of looking at one's dark side and points the way to the many individual and social benefits of taking one's life seriously. Another benefit is the lovely prose which leads one deeper and deeper into one's own inner world. Anyone interested in their religious and spiritual life will benefit and enjoy this remarkable book.
